It's a small and interconnected world out there...

So this morning I went to a customer who was referred to me by another customer of mine. He had a MacBook Pro and MacBook that had water damage and needed data recovered. No Problem, the drive's are still in pretty good shape. As I'm transferring data we get to talking. He's into music, me to. He's in to tech, Me to. He was a former CEO of AOL Canada... Um... I once had a song placed in a Nissan commercial? Doesn't quite match up, I know. He's Canadian, I'm going to Canada Tomorrow! We both read Bob Lefsetz! We both know some of the same people in the music industry. He's shifting out of the tech world and into the Music world; developing a Jam band and starting an All-in tech savvy management company, I'm shifting away from music (as a source of income) and more into the tech industry (as a source of income.) He dig's Drum and Bass, I made Drum and Bass. It goes on and on. None the less I get back to the office to enter his info in my address book and find a press release about him on line. The press release was written by the person who referred me to him. It sure is a small interconnected world at times.

Apple’s New Data Center Likely to Focus on Cloud Computing

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/08/apple-cloud/#

A 500,000 square foot data center? As the Investors would say, "What's the play here?" Or even better as Tom Waits would say in hushed raspy voice "What are they building in there?"

I have no concrete info obviously, but my bet is on the expansion of MobileMe and the move of proccessing power and data storage for apps like iMovie, iPhoto and iWeb. More done in the cloud from where ever you are on what ever platform and device you're on.

Maybe it's more simple than that. Maybe it's iDisks big enough to work with time machine and back up your entire system in the cloud.

Or perhaps it's to offer spotify like services for both music and movies. On demand and subscription based?

Someday we'll know for sure but for now it's back to "What are they Building in there!"

It's getting kinda sad when you become less productive when the internet goes down.

I was working on multiple projects; entering data in FMP, composing an Email, and helping a customer through iChat screen sharing when the internet went down. Then I found my self searching for something productive to do that was work related. It was kinda hard because I was really focused on the three projects I had going on. This is definitely the down side of the cloud. Abut 10 years ago, when I worked at a CD import/export company in Miami, we used to shout out "Everybody out of the pool" when the system went down, then wander off to go get some coffee or heckle the IT guys or more specifically, the developers who were trying to work out the bugs in said system. It used to make me laugh. Now it makes me wonder how much time/money I'm losing. Amazing what a difference 10 years will make.

Breakfast can wait... For Families Today, Technology Is Morning’s First Priority

Media_httpgraphics8nytimescomimages20090810businessmorningspanjpg_mlgjgjckdhpyagy

I know this is true in our house on most mornings. Kristen and I will often times be at the computer while eating breakfast and sometimes even before we eat.

For us it's an effort to multitask, but we get sucked in and then find our selves scrambling to get out the door. We're so wired it's a challenge to ignore the impulse to check email or status updates.

There's room for improvement and balance here. Surely.

Install Damn You!!!

I've been watching this 10.5.8 update for about 30 minutes now and 10 of those minutes have said about 2 minutes remaining. Seems like most of these 10 minutes have been spent on updating the reciepts file.

This update is happing on a 1.8 GHz PPC G5 and the drive speed is 5400

It's billable time, but I wish it was a bit faster.
